Complete process for installing a residential generator

Install a residential standby generator is an excellent solution to ensure the continuity of the electrical supply in the event of a failure. This process requires careful planning and precise execution to ensure the safety and efficiency of the installation. Here is a detailed guide to understanding the various steps in this process.

Understanding the needs and choosing the generator

The first crucial step is meeting the customer on site to fully understand their real needs. This meeting makes it possible to propose the generator model best suited to the situation. The discussion includes evaluating critical devices and systems that require continuous power and estimating the power required.

It is important to note that there are several types of generators: portable generators and standby generators. Portable generators require manual installation by the customer at each failure, which can be cumbersome.

On the other hand, standby generators, once installed, can power most or even the entire house in the event of a failure. This means that the customer does not have to worry about starting the generator in the event of a power outage. Standby generators thus offer a practical and safe solution, eliminating the need for the customer to remove and connect the generator manually, especially in difficult weather conditions.

Selecting the ideal location

Determining the ideal location for the generator is critical. The location must respect building standards and from the municipality, while being convenient for installation and maintenance. You must also choose the location for the transfer switch and measure the required wiring distance between the generator and the generator.

Once these aspects have been defined, we propose to install the generator either on a concrete slab or on a raised aluminum support, in order to avoid the complications associated with snow removal.

Installation planning

Installation planning starts with determining a date that is convenient for both parties. This ensures the availability of the customer and the electricians. Once the date has been set, the service manager confirms the appointment. It ensures that all the necessary information is passed on to the electricians. This includes technical installation details, customer preferences, and safety standards.

The director also checks that all the required equipment is ready. He coordinates with plumbers for gas connections. This coordination avoids delays and unforeseen events. Clear communication with the customer is maintained to answer all questions. This ensures a positive and stress-free experience for the customer.

Preliminary preparations

On the day of installation, electricians validate the location with the customer to ensure that there are no last-minute changes. They usually start by leveling the slab with gravel and stone dust to ensure a solid and stable base. The generator is then anchored to the chosen slab or support.

Electrical installation and connections

The actual installation starts with preparing the wiring to the transfer switch. The electricians then turn off the power and modify the electrical input to accommodate the transfer switch. They finalize all connections, apply sealant to openings, bury cables if necessary, and restore power to the house.

Gas connections

The gas connections are made by our team or by the customer's plumber, depending on what was agreed in the contract. This step is crucial to ensure a reliable and secure gas supply to the generator.

Start-up and tests

When the gas connections are ready, we contact the customer to make an appointment to start up the generator. This process includes several tests: gas pressure test, battery test, charger check, heating elements, and oil check. The generator is also programmed, registered for warranty, and connected to the Mobil Link system where possible, for remote monitoring.

Annual maintenance

To ensure the longevity and proper functioning of the generator, annual maintenance is recommended. We offer a maintenance plan that includes regular checks and preventative maintenance to ensure your generator is always ready to go when needed.

By following these detailed steps, you can be sure that the installation of your home generator will be carried out in a professional, safe and efficient manner, giving you peace of mind in all circumstances.
